The White House on Monday sent the US Congress a draft of the US defense budget for fiscal year 2024.
The presidential administration has submitted to the US Congress a draft defense budget for the next fiscal year, 2024, in the amount of $886 billion. It provides a 5.2% pay increase for military personnel and the largest allocation for research and development. On Monday, March 13, according to Reuters.
The agency stressed that such a defense budget for the United States would be the largest since World War II.
The total 2024 defense spending the White House is asking Congress to approve is $28 billion, up from $858 billion last year.
It was noted that the draft US defense budget for the first time provides for the purchase of missiles and other munitions under multi-year contracts, which are usually concluded for aircraft and ships.
The project also provides for accelerating the Pentagon’s procurement of 5th generation F-35 fighters, the modernization of the nuclear “triad” of the States, as well as shipbuilding and the development of space capabilities.
Another $145 billion in the draft budget is earmarked for the development of new weapons such as hypersonic missiles.
Aid to Ukraine from the US Department of Defense in the draft budget for fiscal year 2024 remained the same as last year – $300 million. At the same time, the Pentagon said that, if additional funds are needed, another additional request may be prepared.
Since the full Russian invasion, the US has given about $30 billion in aid to Ukraine.
As previously reported, the US share of global arms exports increased from 33% to 40%, while Russia’s share decreased from 22% to 16% between 2013-17 and 2018-22.
