The first 10 Ukrainian Leopard 2 crews are completing their training in Spain. This week, Spain will also complete the training of the technical staff who are being trained at the Toledo Coordinating Training Center in Zaragoza.
This was reported by the press service of the Spanish Ministry of Defense in their social networks.
For four weeks, the Ukrainian military underwent tactical and technical training, the formation of operational units and the performance of vehicle maintenance tasks.
These courses were launched after the official commitment by the Spanish authorities to contribute to the defense of Ukraine through the transfer of tanks and the training of military personnel.
The Ukrainian military arrived in Spain on February 16 and will return home on March 15. The contingent formed at the facilities of Zaragoza consists of 40 tankers – four per crew, as well as 15 service personnel.
Military personnel already have combat experience in using tanks, so the training focused on the technical characteristics of the Leopard 2 tanks. As for tactical training, it was originally developed for the formation of operational and consolidated crews.
Thanks to the training carried out by the Spanish army over the past four weeks, the Ukrainian military will be able to operate the systems of the combat vehicle and perform maintenance tasks on various mechanical and electronic components.
In general, the Spanish authorities undertook to transfer ten Leopard 2A4 tanks taken from long-term storage bases as part of military assistance. The country will also ensure their repair and modernization.
The restoration of tanks is carried out by the Spanish defense company Santa Barbara Sistemas, which specializes in the modernization and maintenance of armored vehicles. It is known that the plant is working on the preparation of the first six Leopard 2A4 tanks at its facilities in Alcala de Guadaira in Seville.
The tanks arrived there for restoration in early February, brought from the Casetas armored storage base located in Zaragoza.
