Finland is one of NATO’s closest partners with a mature democracy, the Secretary -General of the Alliance said.
The process of Finland’s entry into NATO will be quick and smooth. This was stated by Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Reuters reported on Thursday, May 12th.
In his opinion, Finland’s membership will strengthen NATO and the country itself.
“If Finland decides to apply, it will be welcomed into NATO and the accession process will be smooth and fast,” Stoltenberg said.
He stressed that Finland is one of NATO’s closest partners with a mature democracy that can make an important contribution to Europe’s security.
On Thursday, Finnish President Sauli Niiniste and Prime Minister Sanna Marin issued a joint statement. They announced their intention to immediately apply for Finland to join NATO.
In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Finland’s entry into NATO would not strengthen the country’s security. In this case, the Russian military will consider “all necessary measures.”
