The Russians continue to establish defensive lines in rear areas far from the current front lines in Ukraine.
The construction of defensive lines by the Russians in the regions of Belgorod and Kursk is an information operation, the purpose of which is to portray Ukraine as a threat to Russia. This was announced on Friday, March 10, by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
“The construction of fortresses, which are unlikely to be attacked by anyone, has the purpose of propaganda of” demonizing “Ukraine,” they said.
Experts point out that Russian troops continue to establish defensive lines in rear areas far from the current front line, as well as deep in Russia, where fighting is unlikely to take place.
Speaking about the defense line, the Institute also emphasized that its construction was a mindless waste of money.
So, the governor of the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on March 9 that the Russian authorities had finished building a “notch line” of fortifications along the border with Ukraine. He also said it amounted to 10 billion rubles (about $132 million).
Analysts pointed out that the occupiers were also digging similar defense lines in Crimea.
“The appearance of Russian fortresses in Crimea may indicate that Russian troops are not confident in their ability to hold the occupied territories in southern Ukraine for a long time,” notes ISW.
Earlier it was reported that the government of Ukraine decided to urgently build fortifications in some regions.
