Iranian president defends wearing hijab as religious and legal necessity

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi confirmed that the use of veil Islam is a legal obligation and a religious necessity for Iranian women to lead a “chaste” life and ensure the safety of society.

The President also called on institutions Iran to “enforce” the enforcement of laws that have mandated the wearing of the hijab since 1983 by all Iranian women over the age of nine, according to a statement released this Friday by the government.

“The social experience of the Islamic Republic shows that the women and girls of this country attach particular importance to the preservation of chastity and veil as a priority to ensure the security of a chaste and religious life,” Raisi said Thursday at the State Public Council.

The ultra-conservative president called the wearing of the hijab a “necessity of Sharia” – Islamic law – and a legal requirement that members of Iranian society agreed to and that everyone must abide by in Iran.

Thus, Raisi called on cultural and educational institutions and the media to “clarify the issue of the veil and chastity” to young people in order to “clarify doubts” on this issue.

The president Iran acknowledged that “some people have different opinions” about veilbut stressed that “observance of the laws must be considered a principle”.

For this reason, he asked the State Social Council and other institutions of the Persian country “to create the necessary coordination to supervise the application of the law ( veil) to create conditions for maintaining social security”.

The president’s remarks came as many Iranians stopped veiling their heads in the country, in a sort of social revolution unleashed by Mahsa Amini’s death in September after being arrested precisely for wearing the hijab badly.

The death of a 22-year-old Kurdish girl sparked the largest anti-Islamic Republic protests in decades, led by young people shouting “woman, life, freedom,” which all but disappeared after a crackdown that left almost 500 dead and four demonstrators hanged.

Given women’s ongoing gestures of social defiance, more and more conservative voices are calling for laws to be passed to enforce the use of these garments.

“Removing the veil is tantamount to hostility towards the Islamic Republic and its values. People who commit this abnormal act should be punished,” Iranian judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ecei said this week.

Currently, women are not forced to cover their heads, but steps have been taken in this regard in recent weeks.

Authorities recently closed two pharmacies, in Tehran and north of Amol, because their employees did not wear veil and at several universities they reminded students to cover up.
