On March 10, the Parliament of Georgia held an official procedure that “killed” the bill on “foreign agents”, which led to mass protests.
Today, the Georgian deputies rejected in the second reading the draft project “On the transparency of foreign influence.” This step was necessary in order for the draft adopted in the first reading to be officially withdrawn from consideration.
The protesters who gathered outside the parliament greeted the news with applause.
On March 7, the Georgian parliament passed the bill on transparency of foreign influence in the first reading with 76 votes, the minimum required majority.
After two nights of protests and a violent dispersal of demonstrators outside the Georgian parliament, the Georgian authorities announced that they were “responding” to the bill on “foreign agents.”
Recall, on the eve of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia announced the dismissal of all administrative detainees during the last days of protests in Tbilisi. The authorities satisfied the demand of the demonstrators, who on March 7-8 held thousands of rallies near the parliament building. The police used tear gas and water cannons against the protesters, the demonstrators threw stones and built barricades.
