Baghdad owes Tehran about $18 billion for gas and electricity.
Iraq received permission from the United States to pay Iran $500 million in gas and electricity bills. This was announced on March 10 by the Secretary General of the Iran-Iraq Chamber of Commerce Hamid Hosseini, Tasnim wrote.
“During the last visit of the Iraqi Foreign Minister (to the US), permission was received to pay Iran $500 million,” the official said.
According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, the republic’s total debt to Tehran is about $18 billion.
It can be recalled that earlier the United States imposed various sanctions against Iran, some of which imposed a ban on banking operations in Tehran.
Foreign banks also refused to carry out financial transactions in Iran, because in this case they would be subject to the second US sanctions.
