Scientists explained that whales need to be studied using drones because the animals are large and difficult to measure from a boat.
In Antarctica, Ukrainian scientists from the Akademik Vernadsky Station began using drones to study humpback whales. The National Antarctic Science Center reported this on Facebook.
In particular, experts can use them to determine the size of an animal, draw conclusions about its age category, which allows a better understanding of the state of whale populations. To study their reactions to the approach of boats and their proximity, as well as to study the behavior of whales in general.
It is known that the first stage of work was carried out by employees of the Department of Biology and Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Science in the area of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Scientists have made several important studies of whales and seals, which have been going on for several years at the station and are part of the international cooperation of the National Academy of Science with the Laboratory of Biotelemetry and Behavioral Ecology of the University. of California (USA) and the marine mammal photo-identification project.
Experts took photo-ID photographs of humpback whales, fin whales, killer whales, Weddell seals and leopard seals, and conducted acoustic recordings of marine mammals.
In the coming months, scientists will continue this work at the Akademik Vernadsky station.
It was previously reported that in Macquarie Harbor on the west coast of Tasmania in Australia there was a mass stranding of approximately 230 whales.
