The press secretary of the Kremlin leader says that the “pioneers” in the adoption of such a law are the United States.
Russia has nothing to do with the draft law on foreign agents in Georgia, or with the protests caused by this document. This was announced on Thursday, March 9, by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, at a press briefing.
The Russian official commented in this way on the US claim that the bill was inspired by the Kremlin.
“There was no Kremlin inspiration, the Kremlin had absolutely nothing to do with it,” he said.
According to him, the “pioneers” in such laws are the United States.
“And even one of the versions of the bill (in Georgia – ed.), if we understand correctly, is very similar to a similar US law. The second version is not very similar to the US law, is softer in essence. But , of course, we have nothing to do with either one,” the Kremlin spokesman tried to assure.
He also assured that the unrest in Georgia “causes the Kremlin to worry”, because it is important for the Russian Federation that “it is calm” along the perimeter of its borders.
“It is still a state close to us, and despite the fact that we have no relations with Georgia, however, of course, the state of affairs there cannot be a cause for our concern. Of course, it is important for us that there should be peace on the perimeter of our borders, here today, of course, the situation leaves much to be desired,” said Peskov.
The Kremlin spokesman urged Russian citizens, who are now in Georgia, to be careful amid the latest events in the country.
As you know, after the adoption by the Georgian parliament of the first reading of the law on “foreign agents”, protests took place in the center of Tbilisi for two days, accompanied by clashes with the police .
We add that the ruling Georgian Dream party and the Power of the People movement decided to withdraw from the country’s parliament the bill on “foreign agents”, which caused mass protests.
