The Foreign Ministry said that any initiative to include the Russian Federation in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism “is tantamount to punishing the entire Russian people.”
The Foreign Policy Committee of the Slovenian Parliament rejected the opposition Democratic Party’s proposal to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. This was reported by Euractiv on Thursday, March 9.
It was noted that the committee unanimously supported the conclusions of the coalition, which condemned the Russian war in Ukraine, and called on the government to continue to provide assistance to Kyiv and promote “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.” However, the committee did not support a draft resolution that would recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
“We will show our support for the Ukrainian people, who are showing incredible courage in defending their homeland and fighting for the values of freedom and democracy, and at the same time we will condemn the aggression of Russia, ” said the Democrats, who did. this proposal.
But the ruling coalition opposed it. Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fayon said any initiative to include Russia on the list of countries sponsoring terrorism “is tantamount to punishing the entire Russian people.”
The Foreign Ministry explained that there is no category or list of countries that support terrorism in European or Slovenian law. The relevant resolutions have been adopted only by seven EU member states, and in the United States, where there are legal grounds for declaring states as sponsors of terrorism, the Russian Federation is not included in this list.
The opposition called the foreign ministry’s statement “lethargic”. Democratic MP and former Slovenian Foreign Minister Anze Logar said diplomatic pressure on Russia should be increased in the same way as sanctions.
“Regardless of the vote, it will be noticed both in Kyiv and in Moscow,” summed up the leader of the Democrats, Janez Jansa.
It will be remembered that in November 2022, the European Parliament recognized Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. The United States is working on an alternative to recognizing the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
