North Korea on Thursday launched a short-range ballistic missile into the Yellow Sea, according to the South Korean army, which will begin large-scale military exercises with the United States next Monday.
The launch took place around 6:20 pm local time this Thursday (9:20 am GMT) from the western coastal city of Nampo, according to a statement from the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), which did not provide more details about the launch at this time.
The South Korean military added that they continue to monitor the situation and will maintain a “fully prepared position” in close cooperation with USA.
US and South Korean military exercises
Seoul and Washington plan to start their joint Freedom Shield spring exercise next Monday. North Korea considers this an attempt to invade its territory, to which last month she threatened to respond with an “unprecedented response.”
In addition, in recent days, South Korea and USA Other exercises were conducted over the Yellow Sea (called the West Sea in both Koreas) with the participation of an American B-52 strategic bomber and South Korean F-15 and F16 fighters.
North Korea Last Tuesday, he also threatened to give an “overwhelming response” to the latest Allied military action.
The North even warned late last month that if USA continues to implement so-called “extended deterrence” and maintains a plan to hold major military exercises with South Korea this month, the regime may consider these actions as a “declaration of war.”
The so-called extended or expanded deterrence is a commitment made by Washington last May with Seoul, which consists in sending US strategic assets such as the B-1 bomber to the Korean Peninsula based on the actions of the northern regime.
The peninsula is experiencing historic levels of tension after 2022, when North Koreawhich rejected proposals to return to dialogue, conducted a record number of weapons tests and during which the allies once again conducted large maneuvers and practiced extended deterrence. (As reported by EFE)
