Irakli Kobakhidze, chairman of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party, said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of part of Ukrainian territories were the result of the Revolution of Dignity.
According to Kobakhidze, the Georgian “radicals” who have come out in recent days to mass protests in Tbilisi, provoked by an attempt by the authorities to introduce a high-profile law on “foreign agents”, allegedly want the same thing. This is reported by the publication “Georgia News”.
What happened to the Maidan and what did it bring to Ukraine? They lost Crimea and most of Lugansk and Donetsk, the continuation of all this is the war that is going on in Ukraine today,” Kobakhidze said.
Kobakhidze also remembered the Member of the European Parliament Viola von Cramon, commenting on the actions of the Georgian security forces against the protesters, she saw analogies with the actions of the Yanukovych regime during the events of the Revolution of Dignity.
As for the comparison with the Maidan, firstly, I will tell you that the Georgian Yanukovych is in prison and his name is Mikheil Saakashvili,” Kobakhidze said. “We will not act according to the agenda of the radicals, the agenda of Viola von Cramon, but in accordance with the interests of the Georgian society.
In addition, he said that the radical opposition misled the society and called statements that the adoption of the law on “foreign agents” would negatively affect the process of gaining the status of an EU candidate by Georgia as speculation.
According to him, the ruling party, after the adoption of the bills in the first reading, will wait for the conclusion of the Venice Commission, which will take less than three months.
At the same time, Kobakhidze called the 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia a revolution of foreign agents, which brought the country nine anti-European years.
Meanwhile, in Tbilisi today, March 8, protests continued. According to media reports, the protesters, in which more than 35 thousand people take part, put forward two demands to the authorities:
- withdraw the bill on foreign agents from parliament;
- dismiss all those detained at yesterday’s action (according to preliminary data, these are 66 people).
In case of non-compliance with the requirements, the protesters promise to “move to other steps”
Videos have also appeared on social networks from a hospital in Tbilisi, where victims were treated during yesterday’s clashes with security forces.
