The defense of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region allows the Ukrainian Armed Forces to simultaneously prepare a counteroffensive.
This is a front-line city and the military defending it should not be surrounded, because our people are the main thing. This was stated by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with CNN.
We must think first of all about our people and no one should be surrounded, surrounded – this is very important, the head of state noted.
The President replied that the command of the Defense Forces informed him that the defenders of Bakhmut must hold out and do their best “while we receive weapons, provisions and our army prepares for a counteroffensive.”
Zelensky also noted that the Ukrainian military sees the need to remain strong in the Bakhmut area, despite the fact that the occupiers have destroyed the entire city.
Earlier, the head of state explained that the defense of Bakhmut is strategically important and that is why the Defense Forces continue to defend the city and do not withdraw troops. In the event of the occupation of Bakhmut, the enemy may open the way to other cities of the Donetsk region, in particular Kramatorsk and Slavyansky.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated that the Russian army, in the event of the occupation of Bakhmut, would not be able to create an operational effect and move deep into Ukraine. The enemy lacks mechanized brigades, and assault groups are not capable of such tasks.
