The main problem is that the American and Soviet systems are so different that the missile and aircraft cannot “talk” to each other.
The US military is looking to install medium-range air-to-air missiles on MiG aircraft used by Ukraine. This was announced on Tuesday, March 7, by Politico, citing a source in the US Department of Defense.
It was noted that the AIM-120 missiles were designed for Western fighters such as the F-16.
These efforts, if successful, could be part of the solution to Kyiv’s need for additional firepower and air defense as both Ukraine and Russia prepare for major offensives this spring.
It was noted that the integration of the AIM-120 with the MiG may be the first time that the United States will allow Ukraine to launch air-to-air missiles from aircraft. However, the process is fraught with difficulties, said a US Department of Defense official and another person familiar with the matter.
“The missile must not only be physically mounted on the aircraft, but also “talk” to the aircraft’s radar. To fire, the aircraft’s radar first points the missile at a target and directs the missile to in it is close enough to find the target itself,” – said the publication’s sources.
According to them, the main problem is that the American and Soviet systems are so different that the rocket and the plane cannot “talk” to each other.
Recall that there are now two Ukrainian pilots in the United States. The US military is conducting an evaluation of the skills of Ukrainian pilots and the needs of a potential training base for training to fly modern Western aircraft.
It was also reported that ten other Ukrainian pilots may come for training in the United States.
