Those responsible for suppressing protests in Georgia could be subject to US sanctions. The United States is closely following what is happening in Tbilisi.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Washington could impose sanctions against those involved in the scandalous “foreign agents” law in Georgia. Price said that on Tuesday, March 7, at a briefing in Washington.
“We are closely following the events of the last hours in Georgia. We are seeing reports from Tbilisi, according to which tear gas and other means were used against demonstrators to suppress the protests,” Price said.
According to him, those responsible for suppressing protests in Georgia may be subject to US sanctions.
“We have a set of tools to hold anyone in any country accountable for interfering with what is a universal human right,” he added.
Price also expressed hope that the Georgian government will listen to the Georgian people, who are now clearly stating their position.
As reported, on March 7, the Parliament of Georgia adopted in the first reading a bill on the transparency of foreign influence, which largely inherits the Russian law on “foreign agents.”
A large-scale protest is taking place under the parliament building. The police used force and special equipment against the protesters.
The adoption of the bill is supported by the ruling party of Georgia, which states that it is aimed only at achieving transparency in the funding of NGOs and media.
Several hundred non-governmental organizations and media in Georgia signed a statement against the adoption of the law. The United States and the EU have expressed serious concern regarding the Georgian legislative initiative.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, in a speech to protesters in Tbilisi, expressed her support for the protest and vowed to veto the law.
