Western intelligence estimates Russia’s losses in the battles for Bakhmut in the Donetsk region in recent months at 20-30 thousand mercenaries of the Wagner private military company, and about a third of them may have died.
This was stated at a briefing by a top official from one of the Western countries, writes the British edition i. According to him, the West is seeing more and more evidence that Russian conscripts refuse to go into battle in other hot spots along the front line, in particular, in the area of Vogledar, where “hundreds of Russian soldiers are killed or injured every day.”
At the same time, Wagner’s reserve is running out as the number of military-age men in Russia’s prisons begins to decline.
The death rate of the Wagner is significantly higher than in the Russian armed forces. Bakhmut was not successful for the Russians. They’ve been retreating for six months now. There we are seeing a really terrible level of Russian casualties for very minimal territorial gain, and the Russian army is really in a bad state,” the official stressed.
The interlocutor noted “significantly lower” losses in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The West considers Kyiv’s decision to continue to defend “a city that is not tactically important” correct.
They kill many Russians there. It could well go on for another month, or Ukraine could decide to retreat from the city,” he explained.
Recall that NATO intelligence estimates the losses of the Russian side in the battles for Bakhmut as five times higher than the Ukrainian ones. At the same time, British intelligence claims that the defense of Bakhmut continues to drain both the Ukrainian forces and the Russian invaders.
