Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador confirmed that an armed group kidnapped four Americans in matamorosTamaulipas, on the border with TexasUSA.
“Yes (confirmed they were abducted by an armed group), they are US nationals who (according to) the information we have crossed the border to buy medicine in Mexico, and there was a confrontation between the groups and they were detained,” the president replied. to a quick question during his daily press conference.
Lopez Obrador cited a warning from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBIabbreviation) who asked for help and offered a $50,000 reward to find four Americans abducted in matamoros.
According to the initial report from US investigators, the four abductees crossed last Friday into matamoros in a minivan with North Carolina license plates, and shortly thereafter they were robbed by the unsubs and driven away in an event in which a Mexican man was also killed.
“(The FBI) works mainly with the Secretary of Public Safety, with Rosa Isela (Rodriguez), they have a connection. I hope that more detailed information about this will be given later,” the president said.
wave of violence
The kidnapping took place amid a wave of violence in Tamaulipasa state that is the scene of a dispute between drug cartels and which the United States ranks at level 4 in its safety alert, for this reason its citizens are advised not to travel there.
López Obrador promised that “this issue is already being considered” and that “the whole government is working there.”
“This is already being done, I think it will be resolved, I hope so, I wish,” he said.
“Governor (Mr. TamaulipasAmerico Villarreal) is working on it, we have a constant connection with him, all day yesterday,” he added.
Moments before, the ambassador USA in Mexico, Ken Salazarissued a statement saying that “officials from various US law enforcement agencies are working with Mexican authorities at all levels of government to secure the safe return” of the victims.
“We have no higher priority than the safety of our citizens. This is the most fundamental role of the US government,” he said. (E.F.E.)
