In Belarus, the Minsk City Court sentenced opposition leader Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya in absentia to 15 years in a penal colony.
This was announced today, March 6, by the official Belarusian agency BelTA.
It is noted that the trial was held as part of the so-called “case of the coordinating council” of the Belarusian opposition, formed in 2020 against the backdrop of massive falsification of the results of the presidential elections by the regime of Alexander Lukashenko.
Pavel Latushko, another member of the coordinating council, was sentenced to 18 years in a reinforced regime.
Three more members of the coordinating council – Maria Moroz, Olga Kovalkova and Sergey Dilevsky – were sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison.
The court found the oppositionists guilty of:
- a conspiracy committed to seize state power in an unconstitutional way;
- public calls for the seizure of state power;
- committing “actions aimed at causing harm to the national security of Belarus” – in particular, we are talking about calls to impose sanctions against members of the Lukashenka regime;
- creation of an extremist formation;
- inciting social discord.
Tikhanovsky is also charged with “high treason”, and Latushko – “abuse of power and taking a large bribe.”
