Bakhmut has more symbolic significance for Ukraine than operational, Lloyd Austin said.
If the Russian invaders succeed in capturing the city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, it does not mean that Russia has changed the course of the war. This is what US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said, The Guardian reported on Monday, March 6.
The head of the Pentagon believes that Bakhmut has more symbolic significance for Ukraine than operational.
“I think it’s more of a symbolic value than a strategic and operational value,” he said during the visit to Jordan.
At the same time, Austin refused to predict whether Bakhmut would be captured by Russian troops.
“The fall of Bakhmut does not mean that the Russians have changed the course of this struggle,” the American minister added.
Earlier, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said that Ukrainian forces are likely to conduct a limited tactical withdrawal of troops from Bakhmut. However, it is still too early to make an assessment of Ukraine’s intentions to leave the city entirely.
