More than half of Bulgaria’s residents fear a possible conquest of their country, and 62% fear rocket and bomb attacks.
Most Bulgarians fear military aggression from Russia. This was stated in a nationally representative sociological survey conducted by the ESTAT agency on behalf of the Civil Initiatives Workshop Foundation, Euractiv reports on Wednesday, May 11th.
According to the poll, three in four Bulgarians fear the use of nuclear weapons, while 54% say they fear a possible Russian occupation, and 62% fear missile and bomb attacks in various target.
It noted that 50.3% of those surveyed said they expected NATO assistance in the event of an attack on Bulgaria, but only 41% supported Bulgaria’s membership in the alliance, and 33% opposed it.
“This may explain why the country does not support a strict policy against Moscow and why Bulgarian society aims to take a neutral stance about the war in Ukraine,” the report said.
It was also reported that only 10% of Bulgarians say they know the history of Bulgarian-Russian relations, and 80% are unsure of their knowledge, which creates fertile ground for Russian propaganda and distortion of historical facts.
Thus, 61% of Bulgarians are unaware that Russia opposed the annexation of Bulgarian territories in 1885, and 42% of the people are sure that the USSR has not declared war on Bulgaria.
The country was occupied by the Red Army from 1944 to 1947, then Bulgaria was under communist dictatorship for the next 45 years.
Earlier it was reported that the President of Bulgaria criticized the parliament’s decision to help Ukraine. Even the term “military-assistance-technical assistance” itself, in his opinion, is rather “extensible and risky.”
Recall that the Parliament of Bulgaria authorized the repair of equipment for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
