Changes were made to the country’s law to allow the prosecution of potential war criminals identified in the United States from anywhere in the world.
US will repeat Russian war criminals. This is what US Attorney General Merrick Garland said during his visit to Ukraine.
The official noted that until recently, US jurisdiction over war crimes was limited.
“After the start of the Russian invasion, Congress passed legislative changes that would allow the prosecution of potential war criminals identified in the United States from anywhere in the world, and we plan to do so,” said by Garland.
According to him, any person who is in the territory of the United States can be prosecuted.
“This means that in the coming years and decades, Russian war criminals in our country must know that they will end up in court, war criminals will not find refuge in the United States,” the prosecutor general insisted.
Garland added that the War Crimes Victims Justice Amendment expands the original jurisdiction to include alleged perpetrators found in the US, even if they did not commit crimes against American citizens.
The other day, it was reported that the US Attorney General came to Ukraine on an unexpected visit.
Recall that in the evening video message to the people of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the meeting with prosecutors general from Ukraine’s partner states and international institutions. He emphasized that the world’s moral duty is to restore justice and punish war criminals.
