A sharp rise in tensions between Moscow and the West over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already halted Nord Stream 1 and prevented the launch of Nord Stream 2 in February.
Russia’s NordStream subsea gas pipelines will be mothballed, as there are no plans to repair or operate them in the near future. This was reported by Reuters.
Three pipes of the two streams were damaged by explosions in September 2022, one of the Nord Stream 2 pipes remained intact, but the sharp increase in tension between Moscow and the West due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already led to closure of Nord Stream 1 and prevented the launch of Nord Stream -2 in February.
As the newspaper notes, Gazprom says that it is technically possible to repair the pipelines, but Moscow does not see many prospects for improving relations with the West in the foreseeable future, enough for the pipelines to this is necessary.
Europe has sharply reduced its energy imports from Russia over the past year, while Gazprom’s exports outside the former Soviet Union have almost stopped at a post-Soviet low of 101 billion cubic meters.
One Russian source said that Russia considers the project “buried”, two others said that Sevpotok will be kept for possible continuation of work in the future.
Recall that on September 26 in Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2, the pressure in three of the four gas pipelines dropped significantly. Russia called the incident sabotage.
In October, Sweden announced the completion of an investigation conducted jointly with Denmark and Germany. At the same time, the reason for the leaks in Sevpotok was named.
