The jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court is to prosecute those responsible for war crimes and genocide.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a draft agreement with the International Criminal Court on the establishment of the ICC Office in Ukraine. This was announced on March 3 by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The agreement aims to facilitate the process of creation and proper functioning of the Office of the International Criminal Court in Ukraine, its main focus is the investigation of cases pending before the Court since the beginning of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. in 2014,” the Foreign Ministry said.
The Office recalled that the jurisdiction of the ICC is to prosecute specific individuals responsible for war crimes, the crime of genocide and crimes against humanity.
“Ukraine recognizes the jurisdiction of the Court for the purpose of identifying, prosecuting and trying the perpetrators and accomplices of acts committed on the territory of Ukraine during the Revolution of Dignity, as well as crimes committed on the territory of Ukraine since February 20, 2014 in accordance with the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court” – summed up in the ministry.
It was previously reported that 38 countries filed the largest appeal to the ICC over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
