Funds could be sent to Budapest as part of the European Union’s new energy strategy REPowerEU.

The European Commission is ready to compensate Hungary for the imposition of an embargo on Russia’s oil supplies of Budapest as part of the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation for its invasion of Ukraine. On Tuesday, May 10, Politico reports.

According to three European officials, the funds could be sent to Hungary as part of the new EU energy strategy REPowerEU, which is due to be presented next week. Its goal is to stop reliance on Russia’s fossil fuels before 2030.

In addition, the publication claims that negotiations between European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ended without results on May 9, and the next video conference, scheduled by von der Leyen for Tuesday, was canceled. .

Earlier, the President of the European Commission announced “progress” in negotiations with the Hungarian Prime Minister on the implementation of sanctions against Russia. At the same time, he noted the need for further work in this direction.

Recall, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest’s position on the issue of Russia’s oil embargo remains unchanged – the Hungarian government does not support this sanction.
