In Germany, they said that the Leopard 2 will not be transferred to Ukraine. Tanks are needed to fill the “gaps” in NATO and EU countries.
Germany turned to Switzerland with a request to sell Leopard 2 tanks to the German concern Rheinmetall, which produced them, to replace the equipment previously transferred to Ukraine. This was reported on Friday, March 3, by the Swiss newspaper Blick.
The letter by the heads of Germany’s Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Defense, Robert Habek and Boris Pistorius, refers to 96 decommissioned tanks of the Swiss army. The ministers assured that the Leopard 2 will not be transferred to Ukraine – the tanks are needed to fill the “gaps” in NATO and EU countries.
The Swiss Ministry of Defense says the country itself needs 34 decommissioned tanks.
Currently, 134 modern Leopard 2s are in service in Switzerland. Transferring equipment to Germany would require permission from the Swiss parliament. The publication notes that the issue of moving the tanks may cause political debate.
It was previously reported that Germany has increased the number of Leopard 2 tanks to 18, which it plans to send to Ukraine.
