The only option for ensuring the security of Ukraine, with the exception of joining NATO, is a nuclear status. This opinion was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Urmas Reinsal.
If we say that we do not see Ukraine as a member of NATO after this war, this will mean that we are afraid – either we predict that Russia will attack again, and then the NATO countries will be involved in a world war, or at least in a war for a European continent. This is already a recognition that a large-scale war will be repeated, Reinsalu said in an interview with the American Newsweek portal.
He rejected any alternatives to Ukraine’s membership in NATO – in particular, a plan for rapprochement with the North Atlantic Alliance in exchange for Kiev’s greater willingness to negotiate with Moscow, which, as the media wrote, was being promoted by Britain, Germany and France.
What is the point of trying to copy NATO if you make it clear that it is not NATO? It’s like a semi-NATO. I would be very suspicious of such a copy. To be honest, the only guarantee other than NATO would be to provide Ukraine with nuclear weapons, Reinsalu is convinced.
At the same time, the diplomat stressed that such a step is impossible and undesirable in view of the obligations of the nuclear states of the military-political bloc regarding the nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. Reinsalu said leaving Kyiv outside the Western security umbrella would undermine the country’s reconstruction process.
Imagine that we do not provide Ukraine with Article 5 guarantees after the war. Then we will encourage Ukraine to build its self-defense on a hedgehog strategy, like in the Wild West, standing in its fort with rifles and waiting for Russia. I think this will create a gray area among Europe. This would be a big negative signal about their aspirations to the European Union, in terms of security, investment guarantees and everything else, – summed up the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry.
Recall, MEP, former Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius believes that Ukraine does not need any action plan for NATO membership, since it meets most of the criteria.
