Attorney General Merrick Garland and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) clashed in a heated exchange over the Justice Department’s response to protests outside the homes of Supreme Court justices in 2022. (You can look back and forth between the two below.)
Cruz, who called the protesters “rioters,” shouted as he followed Garland about the Justice Department’s handling of the leaked draft opinion that indicated the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court favored overturning Roe v. Wade last time. May.
In Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Cruz accused Garland, a former federal judge whose nomination to the Supreme Court was blocked by Senate Republicans, of allowing threats of violence against judges and argued that Garland and the DOJ ” They did nothing. .”
“You sat on your hands,” Cruz said as he mocked the group’s publication of judges’ addresses and the arrest of a man with a gun near Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s home.
Garland quickly addressed Cruz’s claims and noted that he did something no other attorney general in the history of the Justice Department had done before: He ordered U.S. marshals to secure judges’ homes.
Cruz then interrupted Garland and asked him if he had invoked a federal statute that prohibits picketing or marching to influence judges outside their homes.
“Senator, you asked me if I sat on my hands and instead you sent 70 US Marshals to defend…” Garland responded before Cruz interrupted him again with a question.
