The Russian army began to launch Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones from the territory of the Bryansk region of Russia bordering Ukraine in order to threaten Kyiv more.
This is stated in the daily code of the British Ministry of Defense, published on Twitter.
On February 27, the Defense Ministry of Ukraine confirmed the damage to 11 Shahids out of 14 launched at night. The head of the Kyiv city military administration, Sergei Popko, said that nine of them were shot down near the airspace of Kyiv. Three more were shot down in the Chernihiv region.
Given the attack vector, these Shahed drones were most likely launched from the Bryansk region of Russia. Previously, from mid-December 2022, the only observed launch site was from the Krasnodar Territory across the Sea of Azov, British intelligence points out.
The recent slowdown in the rate of Shahedin attacks may indicate that Moscow has exhausted its current supply: it will likely look for replenishment.
The second launch pad would give the Russians a different axis of attack closer to Kyiv. This would likely reduce the time spent in the air over Ukraine and be an attempt to further stretch Ukrainian air defenses, according to British intelligence.
