Latvia will play the role of a lawyer for Ukraine in the creation of a special tribunal against the Russian Federation.
Russia must be brought to justice as soon as possible and held accountable for its war crimes in Ukraine. This was announced on Monday, February 27, by the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, writes Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty.
He also called for the rapid creation of a tribunal in Russia.
“Such a tribunal should be created. We should not wait for Russia to be defeated or for Putin to leave power. It can be created, and I want to say that it will be timely, because not all criminals will be personally present at the tribunals ,” he said.
At the same time, Levits pointed out that in Yugoslavia some criminals were tried in absentia, and a similar procedure could be repeated.
“The most important thing is not that someone is in court like this; it is more important that we expose and study this mechanism of war, aggression, to make it clear how such a war was possible, to show to the public, to by judicial means,” said the President of Latvia. .
He said it is important to explain to society that such behavior is not acceptable.
“And I think this principle is more important than everyone sitting on the dock,” he stressed.
At a meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Vienna, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Latvian Seimas, Richard Kols, at the end of his speech, sent Russia “following the ship.”
Earlier it was also reported that Latvia will transfer hundreds of thousands of euros worth of medical equipment to Ukraine.
Remember, according to the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, the country’s aid to Ukraine reached 0.93% of the Latvian GDP.
