The Russian side has more hostages in its captivity than Ukraine. Many of them are women and children.
Almost half of those in Russian captivity were civilians. There are many women and children hostages. This was announced on Monday, February 27, by the head of Ukrainian intelligence, Kirill Budanov, in an interview for the Voice of America.
“About 40% of the hostages are civilians. Just civilians. So in principle, we are clearly outnumbered. We don’t count civilians. There are many women, unfortunately, and children, all of old people, postmen, There are train workers, mayors, and janitors,” he said.
He explained that the decisive factor was the timing of the start of a full-scale invasion, as well as the situation in Azovstal.
“Unfortunately, they have more prisoners of war than us. It’s very easy to explain. First of all, they got 90% of all prisoners of war in the first days. The first days – the first month. Plus even the terrible tragedy in Mariupol, when they were forced to take the step we took,” said the head of the GUR.
He also expressed confidence that Ukraine knows almost all captured compatriots.
It should be noted that during the war years, Ukraine managed to conduct 38 prisoner exchanges. 1863 people were released. Of these, 1756 Ukrainian soldiers.
Remember, on February 16, another exchange of prisoners took place between Ukraine and Russia. It managed to free 100 Ukrainian soldiers and one civilian.
