Petr Pavel believes that Ukraine meets the main criteria of the Alliance, and the Ukrainian military will be the most experienced of all.
NATO should consider Ukraine’s membership immediately after the war on its territory. This was said by the elected President of the Czech Republic, ex-NATO General Petr Pavel in an interview with Suspіlny.
Pavel explained why it was impossible to accept Ukraine into the Alliance before the end of the war.
“From the point of view of international law, as soon as Ukraine becomes a member of NATO, while still in conflict, the Alliance will become a party to this conflict. One can only imagine how big the conflict between NATO and Russia will be. If well, probably even with the use of nuclear weapons. So we have to wait for the end of the war and the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty. And here the question of NATO membership will arise,” said Pavel.
He noted that Ukraine should be treated as a new member of NATO – for upholding standards, for protecting values.
“And also the military of Ukraine is probably the most experienced of all, and will be a big advantage for NATO countries. So, there are all the reasons why we should consider Ukraine’s membership in NATO immediately after of war,” said Pavel.
When a journalist asked what could make it easier for Ukraine to become a member of NATO, the newly elected president said that when joining the Alliance, several principles should be followed, namely:
-
common values;
-
long term interest;
-
technical compatibility;
-
political will from all sides.
“In terms of technical compatibility, Ukraine has done its homework. In terms of values and long-term strategic interests, again, we have full compatibility,” he said.
Therefore, according to Pavel, only the condition of the absence of a conflict or a territorial dispute, which now continues on Ukrainian territory, remains.
Recall that the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, invited the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to take part in the next summit of the Alliance in July.
