Analysts from Germany and Slovakia studied the dynamics of hostilities in Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion and released a 40-page report titled “How to Defeat Russia – What NATO Armed Forces Should Learn from the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
The work was written under the guidance of the German military expert Nico Lange, who from 2019 to 2022 was the chief of staff of the German Ministry of Defense. The other two authors of the report, commissioned by the European think tank GLOBSEC, were Professor Carlo Masala of the Bundeswehr University in Munich and retired Slovak NATO General Pavel Matsko.
Here are the main provisions of the report.
Artillery. Analysts concluded that one of the main keys to the success of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield was “modern, smart artillery.” In this regard, NATO forces, in their opinion, should also send “significantly powerful artillery forces – wheeled and tracked, towed and self-propelled” to the eastern flank. Experts also draw attention to the successful use of drones by the Ukrainian army “to identify targets and control fire.”
information campaign. In order to counter the Russian propaganda struggle, analysts recommend, based on the Ukrainian experience, to radically transform the structure and production of the content of strategic communications of the armed forces in NATO countries. This must be done so that information policy and technology can become as “successful as in Ukraine”.
Human factor. The most important lesson to be learned from the year-long war in Ukraine is that battles will be won by people, not just weapons, says retired NATO general Pavlo Matsko:
Quality over quantity. Of course, we need high quality weapons. But the most important thing is that we have highly qualified people and a resilient society.
Modern weapons. Noting the importance of the human factor, experts, however, emphasize that Western weapons played a significant role in the success of the Ukrainian army. It gave the Armed Forces an air superiority and also helped launch a successful counteroffensive in late August, says German military expert Nico Lange. According to him, the supply of infantry fighting vehicles and tanks will allow Ukraine to recapture even more of its territories.
