This year, the European Commission proposed an “accelerated safeguard mechanism” due to a significant increase in imports of some agricultural products from Ukraine.

The European Commission proposed to extend for one year the suspension of import duties, quotas and trade protection measures for exports from Ukraine to the European Union. This was reported on the EU website on Thursday, February 23.

“This is a continuation of the EU’s ongoing support for the Ukrainian economy and helps alleviate the difficult situation that Ukrainian producers and exporters find themselves in… The main objective of the autonomous measures in trade is to support Ukraine, but the measures also take into account the concern of the EU industry,” said the statement.

To this end, and due to the significant increase of imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine to the EU in 2022, the updated autonomous trade measures contain “an accelerated mechanism of precaution to protect the union market if necessary.”

The proposal will now be considered by the European Parliament and the EU Council “to ensure a smooth transition from the current regime of autonomous trade measures to the new one.”

Recall that in May 2022, the European Union removed trade restrictions on Ukraine. As a result, by the end of the year, Ukrainian exports to the EU exceeded the pre-war level.

At the same time, it is reported that the EU is complaining about cheap grain from Ukraine. This creates problems for farmers from Eastern European countries.
