Belarus has made a number of amendments to the draft resolution of the United Nations General Assembly “Principles underlying the achievement of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine”, dedicated to the anniversary of the start of a full-scale war by Russia against the Ukrainian people.
The UN electronic library has registered two documents with adjustments to the draft resolution provided by the official Minsk.
In one of them, Belarus proposes to delete the words “one year after the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine” from the preamble.
The wording “…Russian aggression against Ukraine, including attacks on critical infrastructure facilities throughout Ukraine…” is proposed to be simplified to the phrase “…military operations in Ukraine”.
In addition, Minsk proposed to exclude from the staged part the requirement that “the Russian Federation immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”
At the same time, it is proposed to supplement this part with a condemnation of the statements made by “some leaders of the Normandy Contact Group regarding the real intentions that guided them when developing a set of measures to implement the Minsk agreements — intentions that do not meet the goals of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk areas. Ukraine”.
In another document, Belarus proposes to note in the preamble “long-term “outside” deliveries of weapons to the conflict zone, undermining the prospects for achieving sustainable peace”, and in the staging part – a call for “starting peace negotiations”.
The resolution, according to official Minsk, should also be supplemented with a call to “take into account the root causes of the conflict in and around Ukraine, including the legitimate concerns of member states for security”, and also “refrain from sending weapons to the conflict zone”.
DW writes that the UN General Assembly is ready to support the Ukrainian peace resolution. The resolution put forward by Ukraine and its supporters can be adopted on Thursday, February 23. It notes the need to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace as soon as possible in accordance with the founding Charter of the United Nations.
