Nuclear rhetoric is ever-present with threats by Russian politicians and “experts” suggesting the Kremlin use nuclear weapons.
Moscow does not plan to use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine. This was announced on Wednesday, February 22, by Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrei Kelin in an interview with British radio LBC.
At the same time, he noted that we are talking about “this contradiction.”
“In this conflict? No, we have a very clear doctrine, and it describes a very precise case when nuclear weapons can be used: if Russia is the first to carry out a nuclear attack and if the conventional attack the existence of our state is very serious,” explained the Russian ambassador.
Speaking about the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Arms (START-3), he noted that it was about the suspension of “verification procedures” for strategic nuclear weapons.
“However, we are responsible participants (of the treaty), and the restrictions on nuclear warheads will remain in effect, we will abide by the restrictions written in the treaty,” Kelin assured.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in the START Treaty. He also ordered to prepare for the start of nuclear tests.
