On Monday, May 9, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting via videoconference with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, who arrived in Odessa on a visit, the Presidential press service reports Office.
The head of state congratulated the President of the European Council on the anniversary of victory in World War II and thanked him for his visit to Ukraine.
“I am very glad that now the European Union supports Ukraine at the highest level exactly at this time, when the manifestations of Nazism, unfortunately, exist and are revived. But they should not spread, and included we do everything for it, “he said. Zelensky.
He noted the importance of preventing a food crisis in the world, which could be caused by Russia’s aggressive actions. After all, Russian warships in the Black Sea block the passage of merchant ships to Ukrainian ports.
Zelensky recalled that Ukraine provides grain to nearly 400 million people on the planet. Blocking the export of Ukrainian agricultural products is already leading to rising world food prices. As a result, it could cause increasing hunger and political instability in some regions of the planet.
For his part, the President of the European Council, who visited the port of Odessa, where a blocked ship with Ukrainian grain is located, stressed that wheat should be available to everyone in world so that famine does not spread across the planet.
The interlocutors noted the importance of taking immediate steps to unblock Russia’s Ukrainian ports for grain exports.

Zelensky also noted that in a difficult moment of the Russian aggression, Ukrainians felt with great gratitude the courageous position of Charles Michel and his personal presence in Odessa.
The President of Ukraine also thanked for the policy of sanctions of the European Union. He stressed that Ukraine expects the adoption of the next package of sanctions against the aggressor country. He expressed gratitude to Charles Michel for supporting Ukraine on the path of European unification.
“I want to thank you for your political support, for being here. For the fact that you see Ukraine in the near future, on an equal footing with other members of the European family,” he said.
The President of the European Council, for his part, assured that the European Union will continue to provide Ukraine with maximum financial and defense assistance. The EU has already approved a plan to support our state.
“There must be a Marshall Plan for your initiatives. We must mobilize global support so that you can cope with humanitarian challenges and work, start rebuilding Ukraine’s economy,” Charles Michel said.
He also said that in June the European Council will consider Ukraine’s application for the status of a candidate for EU membership.
Charles Michel said that Ukrainian citizens today are fighting not only for their homeland, but also for common European values of democracy and freedom. And the European Union supports Ukraine and marvels at the resilience and courage of the Ukrainian people.
