The decision to continue Russia’s participation in the agreement will be made by President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian State Duma unanimously adopted a law suspending Russia’s participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). It was found out on Wednesday, February 22.
This document was submitted to the State Duma by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the draft law, START is suspended, and the decision to continue Russia’s participation in the treaty will be made by the head of state. The law shall take effect from the date of its official publication.
On the decision to suspend Russia’s participation in the agreement, Putin announced on February 21, speaking with a message to the Federal Assembly. He emphasized that Russia is not withdrawing from the agreement, but before returning to discussing the issue of continuing work in accordance with this document, Moscow itself must understand “how to consider the combined strike arsenal of NATO.”
In this regard, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that such a decision by Russia would destroy the entire architecture of arms control.
And the head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, called Russia’s decision on START irresponsible.
