At least 26 people have died, 228 have been forced to flee their homes and 338 have been affected by heavy rains on the north coast of Sao Paulo state, the regional government said on Sunday.
“The storm has caused flooding and landslides” and “some access roads” to the state’s north coast are “blocked due to landslides,” the São Paulo state government posted on social media.
governor Sao PauloTarcisio de Freitas, declared a “state disaster” for the cities of San Sebastian, Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba, Ilhabella and Bertioga, “affected by the heavy rainfall that reached the region”.
Meanwhile, the regional military police had seven planes available for casualty rescues, transportation of fire and civil defense rescue units, and humanitarian relief operations, the information added.
urgent Care
President of Brazil Luis Inacio Lula da SilvaFor his part, he announced that he would visit the affected region this Monday to “accompany efforts to combat this tragedy” in coordination with the government of São Paulo, the Ministry of Regional Development and city halls.
“We are going to unite all levels of government and, with the solidarity of society, take care of the wounded, search for the missing and restore roads, energy and telecommunications in the region,” Lula wrote on his Twitter profile.
The mayor’s office of San Sebastian, the city with the most casualties and canceled carnival celebrations, indicated that there were still people among the debris caused by the landslides.
“It’s a scary scene,” San Sebastian Mayor Felipe Augusto said on social media after visiting the area where 50 houses collapsed.
In São Sebastian, according to the São Paulo government’s latest official casualty report, 25 people died and another child under the age of 7 died in Ubatuba, buried under a landslide.
The floods also flooded homes and vehicles in parts of the affected cities.
