China will cross a “red line” if it decides to provide lethal military aid to Russia in its war against Ukraine, the US has warned.
China is considering supplying the Russian Federation with lethal weapons and ammunition for use in the war against Ukraine. This was announced on Sunday, February 19, in an interview with CBS by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
He noted that the PRC has already provided non-lethal weapons to Russia, but now the Asian country’s authorities have decided to expand military support for the Russian Federation, including ammunition.
The US Secretary of State warned that such an escalation would have “serious consequences” for China.
Blinken also said he spoke to top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference and expressed “deep concern” to him about “the possibility that China will provide arms assistance to Russia.”
“If such deliveries become a reality, it will create a serious problem for us and for our relations,” the head of the State Department warned his Chinese counterpart.
Also, the US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield reacted to the information about the possible delivery of weapons to Russia from China. He said that “if the Chinese or anyone else wants to provide lethal support to the Russians in their brutal attack on Ukraine, then this is unacceptable.”
“That would be a ‘red line’,” he stressed.
It was previously reported that China may provide non-lethal military aid to Russia, namely, uniforms or even bulletproof vests.
The talks between Putin and Jinping have raised concerns in the US, where China’s behavior is seen as showing that it is still investing in close ties with Russia.
