A 59-year-old tourist from Australia died Sunday in New Caledonia after being attacked by a shark on Noumea Beach, the mayor’s office of the French South Pacific territory’s capital said.
The victim was swimming near a floating pontoon about 150 meters from the beach when he received multiple bites.
The tourist was “rescued by two sailors who were nearby,” Nouméa prosecutor Yves Dupas told AFP.
Panic among bathers
The victim had large bite marks on his leg and arms, and despite attempts by rescuers to revive him, he died from his injuries when he was carried to the beach.
At the time of the attack, there were a large number of people on the beach of Château Royale, which caused panic among the bathers, and the area was evacuated.
