United Nations Secretary General, António Guterresannounced this Saturday the allocation of funds from the Organization’s Central Emergency Response Fund United Nations (CERF, its abbreviation in English) of $250 million – the largest to date – to “reach the most vulnerable people in the world and prevent hunger.”

It will help people in 19 countries including Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. There are more than 20 million people in these eight countries that are very close to starvation, according to a CERF statement released today.

In addition, funds will be used to strengthen the humanitarian response in Chad, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Honduras, Kenya, Lebanon, Madagascar, Pakistan and Sudan “to combat food insecurity and overcome the effects of climate change and protracted crises.”

“Currently, 339 million people around the world need humanitarian assistance, which is more than 25% more than last year,” Guterres said.

UN and its partners reached almost 160 million people last year, however United Nations warning that “growing humanitarian needs are rapidly outpacing response capacity”.

“While this new infusion of funds will speed up humanitarian operations in 19 emergencies, UN emphasized the need for earlier and larger funding and called on donors to replenish CERF so that resources can reach more and more people in need,” the statement said.
