Twitter critics are lining up to demand that Australian-born right-wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch be stripped of his US citizenship and deported after undermining US democracy with a cascade of lies recently exposed by Fox News about the presidential election from the US as of 2020.
Murdoch, whose media operations often oppose immigration, became a U.S. citizen in 1985, which allowed him to circumvent a law barring foreign nationals from owning more than 20 percent of a U.S. broadcast license.
(Fox News host Tucker Carlson had a moment just last year about the damage foreign-born billionaires can do to a nation.)
Despite Murdoch’s lucrative citizenship swap, he’s apparently not a big fan of American democracy. He and Fox News continued to sell Donald Trump’s baseless claim of a fraudulent presidential election, which news anchors and executives did not believe, according to a bombshell document filed earlier this week.
Murdoch criticized a memorably ugly press conference by Trump ally Rudy Giuliani and lawyer Sidney Powell after Trump’s election defeat, which bizarrely claimed that voting machine software had been rigged in a conspiracy led by Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, who has been in the grave for seven years. years until then. .
“Really crazy stuff. And harmful,” Murdoch wrote in a November 2020 text message, disclosed in a brief filed Thursday by lawyers for Dominion Voting Systems. The company is suing Fox News and parent company Fox Corporation for $1.6 billion for alleged defamation.
Carlson said in a message obtained by Dominion that Powell was “lying” about having proof of his absurd claims and called Trump a “demonic force,” according to the brief. Fox executives were so concerned about the danger Trump posed that they refused to allow him to appear on Lou Dobbs’ show on Jan. 6, 2021, saying it would be “irresponsible,” the brief said.
Still, Murdoch’s Fox continued to support Trump and his story of rigging the election to please the former president’s supporters.
Now his enemies are wreaking havoc on Twitter to get him out of the country.
Murdoch could not immediately be reached for comment.
