Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin commented on whether Russia’s actions on the battlefield can be considered the beginning of a new offensive against Ukraine.
As for whether Russia launched its offensive. What we are seeing, as you have heard from me before, is that Russia continues to put large numbers of troops into the theater of operations. These troops are poorly equipped and poorly trained, and therefore they suffer a lot of casualties, Austin said.
According to him, the US Department of Defense expects this development of the situation to continue.
We also saw how they (the Russians – ed.) Increased artillery fire in the Bakhmut area, added Austin.
Bakhmut, according to the estimates of the American side, will remain a zone of fierce fighting for some time.
In addition, the head of the Pentagon stressed that Washington, together with its allies and partners, “were very amazed by what they saw from the Ukrainian forces.” He assured that the international coalition will do everything possible to provide Ukraine with weapons for success.
Austin also drew attention to how the North Atlantic Alliance has strengthened against the background of the war unleashed by the Kremlin.
Putin thought he could divide NATO, but with his aggression, he accomplished just the opposite. The NATO alliance is now united and stronger than I have ever seen,” Austin said.
