The German authorities did not issue a permit to the German company Siemens Energy for the supply of electrical equipment for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey, which is being built by Rosatom.
The Russian newspaper Kommersant, citing sources, wrote that the Federal Office for Economics and Export Control of Germany did not give Siemens all the necessary permits for the supply of an integrated switchgear, including for the export of documentation.
Kommersant noted that the German authorities fear that the equipment could be taken to Russia, although it was made for a specific facility.
Now the Turkish authorities are negotiating with the German authorities to find out the conditions under which conditions the equipment can be supplied to the nuclear power plant under construction.
Rosatom’s project company, Akkuyu Nuclear, told the newspaper that it had received no official word that supplies of equipment had been halted, and that Siemens Energy was “complying with its contractual obligations.” The German authorities and Siemens Energy did not comment on this.
Earlier in February, the Hungarian authorities announced that Germany had blocked the supply of Siemens equipment for the Paks-2 nuclear power plant, which is also being built by Rosatom. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on February 14 that he views Germany’s actions as an attack on sovereignty.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Western countries imposed several packages of sanctions against Russia, but they did not affect Russian nuclear energy.
In February 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again called on the European Union to impose sanctions on Rosatom, which is responsible for seizing the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
Restrictions against Rosatom were not included in the tenth package of EU sanctions. Hungary and Bulgaria oppose such sanctions.
