MEPs believe that the politician’s health is in a critical condition and demand that he be released for treatment abroad.
Members of the European Parliament are concerned about the deteriorating state of health of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and are demanding that the Georgian authorities pardon him and send him abroad for treatment. This, on Wednesday, February 15, was stated on the website of the European Parliament.
The corresponding resolution, adopted in the European Parliament, states that Saakashvili is losing weight rapidly and, perhaps, “he may have suffered from heavy metal poisoning during his imprisonment.”
Members of the European Parliament called on the current president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, to exercise her constitutional right to pardon Saakashvili, which, according to the EU, would reduce political polarization in the country.
MEPs believe that the way prisoners are treated like the country’s former president is a litmus test for the Georgian government’s commitment to European values and its stated European aspirations, including EU candidate status, which so far has not been issued in Georgia.
The European Parliament reminds the Georgian authorities that they are obliged to give Saakashvili adequate treatment and respect his fundamental rights and personal dignity in accordance with the country’s constitution and international obligations.
The resolution also draws attention to the role of oligarch Bidzin Ivanishvili in the case of Saakashvili “within the limits of a personal vendetta.” The European Parliament called on the European Council and democratic partners to consider imposing sanctions against Georgia’s former prime minister for his role in “undermining the political process” in the country.
We previously reported that the Rada will ask Georgia to send Saakashvili abroad for treatment.
In addition, later it became known that Poland is ready to accept the former president of Georgia for treatment.
