The WHO expects that in the next few days the number of earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria will double.
The earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have been the worst natural disasters in the region in the last century. This was announced on Tuesday, February 14, by Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, writes Politico.
The powerful earthquakes that struck central Turkey and northwestern Syria just over a week ago were the region’s worst natural disaster in a century,” Kluge said.
He pointed out that more than 36 thousand people died in the region as a result of the disaster, and at least 26 million people in both countries are in need of humanitarian assistance. At the same time, Kluge said that these numbers may not be final and noted that the WHO expects that the number of victims and injured may double.
The representative of WHO also drew the fact that the medical system in Turkey is working on the edge, because there is a large number of wounded in the country.
“We have begun the largest deployment of emergency medical teams to the WHO European Region in our 75-year history. Their goal is to support damaged medical facilities,” Kluge added.
It will be remembered that on February 6, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than seven points occurred in the southeast of Turkey, which affected neighboring Syria.
It was previously known that during the earthquake in Turkey, a 46-year-old Ukrainian woman and her five- and ten-year-old sons died.
