On November 23, 2022, a petition appeared on the President’s website calling for officially renaming Russia to Muscovy, replacing the term “Russian” with “Moscow”, “Russian Federation” with “Moscow Federation”.
As of the evening of February 14, 2023, it received more than 25,000 signatures, and now it must be considered by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The author of the petition notes that Muscovy is the historical name of Russia, and Russia has existed for only 301 years. And Ukraine’s inaction on the issue of the historical name of Russia is “a tacit recognition of a hostile dangerous assertion that the Russian Federation is a direct descendant of our Kievan Rus.”
In February 2022, American diplomats recalled that when churches and monasteries known so far were being built in Kyiv, there were only swamps in the place of Moscow. The US Embassy in Ukraine responded with a meme to Vladimir Putin on his “historic” statements that Lenin created Ukraine.
The diplomats showed a collage with two rows of photographs. In the first one, the historical monuments of Kyiv and the dates of their construction are known: 996 – Tithes Church, 1011 – Hagia Sophia, 1070 – Vydubitsky Monastery, 1108 – St. Michael’s Monastery. In the second row, devoted to Moscow, the same forest thickets and swamps are depicted in the photo under the same dates and sights.
Thus, the embassy emphasized that Kyiv is much older than Moscow. Like, when temples and monasteries were already being built in Ukraine, there were only forest thickets in the city of the Russian capital. Therefore, Putin’s theses that Lenin allegedly created Ukraine have no grounds.
