French Defense Minister denounces ‘fake’ depiction of French soldiers in Marvel blockbuster 2 Black Pantherwhere they look like they’re about to plunder resources from a fictional African kingdom Wakanda.
“I strongly condemn this false and misleading portrayal of our armed forces,” he tweeted. Sebastien Lecornu.
“I think and pay tribute to the 58 French soldiers who died defending Mali from Islamist terrorist groups,” he added.
Movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, written by Ryan Coogler, released in France in late 2022, shows French soldiers kneeling in custody before the Queen of Wakanda, in a fictional location, wearing uniforms similar to those used by French soldiers stationed in Mali. The French minister must also answer for his actions to the UN.
The Ministry of Defense recognizes the freedom of a “work of art”, which France Don’t censor or want to withdraw.
But, on the other hand, “there can be no revisionism regarding France’s recent action in Mali,” ministry sources say.
“We intervened at the request of the country to fight terrorist militias far from the story told in the film, that is, the French army that comes to plunder its natural resources,” they add.
France and Africa
France is especially concerned about its image in West Africa after the military juntas of Mali and Burkina Faso called for the withdrawal of French troops stationed in the Sahel region since 2013 to fight jihadists.
The minister’s reaction is part of the will to Paris respond to “the stories of our competitors” in Africa, the ministry acknowledges.
This is a direct hint at the deterioration of the image France public opinion in the Sahel, exacerbated by Russian propaganda and especially the media system of the Wagner paramilitary group. (AFP)
