The US has not yet transferred long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine to Ukraine due to the fact that the American army itself lacks them.
American officials openly told Ukrainian partners at closed meetings about the initially small stocks of these long-range missiles. And the rollover of ATACMS on the battlefield in Ukraine will reduce American stocks and hinder the readiness of the US military for future wars. This was reported by the publication Politico, citing sources in the Pentagon.
Also, the White House fears that the Ukrainian army will begin to use long-range missiles to strike at rear targets in Russia, which will provoke a large-scale escalation.
The Pentagon’s estimate of its holdings is based in part on how many weapons and ammunition planners think it will need to counter the enemy.
One of the sources said that Ukraine is trying to get around this problem by offering the United States the purchase of ATACMS missiles from one of the allied countries that have them in service. These missiles are in service in South Korea, Poland, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Qatar and Bahrain.
Recall that in early February, Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have enough targets in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, so Kiev can guarantee that it will not use long-range missiles in Russia.
