On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy martyr Tryphon. The saint lived in the third century in Nicaea. From an early age, he adopted Christian customs, and as a youth, he showed the gift of miracles, healing the sick. According to legend, Tryphon cast out a demon from the daughter of the Roman emperor Gordian III, who, although he was an idolater, did not persecute Christians. However, in the reign of the next emperor, Decius Trajan, the persecution began, and Tryphon was executed.
People called the sun Tryphon – a rat runner. On this day, our ancestors conjured mice, asked them not to spoil the stacks of bread. It is believed that through certain rituals, rodents can be completely expelled from the village. The medicine man took a bundle of straw from the haystack, brought it to the furnace and lit it with a hot poker. He poured the resulting ash into the places where hay and hay were stored.
Also on the day of Tryphon, unmarried women prayed for lovers. February is traditionally the month of weddings, and this time is considered the best time to ask the higher power for family happiness.
